Tom’s statement can be reworded as “if Dick is not married, either Harry is not married or I am’. Expressed in simpler words, this means that either Dick is married or Tom is married or Harry is un-married. Similarly, Harry’s statement means that either Dick is not married or Tom is married or Harry is not. Analysing the two statements together it is easy to infer that, irrespective of the fact whether Dick is married or not, either Tom is married or Harry is not
But as Dick’s statement suggests that atleast one amongst Harry and Tom is not married, it stands to reason that Harry is a bachelor irrespective of the fact whether Tom is married or not.
Thus, although all three are bachelors, from the statements given it is only possible to conclude that Harry is a bachelor and nothing dentine can be said about the marital status of the other two.
Hasluck, being an intelligent lady, was able to get that information and you may be pleased to know that Harry and Garry, Hasluck's daughter, decided on their first meeting to marry. Two more free souls down the drain!
