INDIAN INSTITUTE

The history of the IIT system dates back to 1946 when a committee
was set up by Hon'ble Sir Jogendra Singh, Member of the Viceroy's
Executive Council, Department of Education, Health and Agriculture
to consider the setting up of Higher Technical Institutions for
post war industrial development in India.
On Sept. 15, 1956, the Parliament of India passed an act known
as the Indian Institute of Technology (Kharagpur) Act declaring
this Institute as an Institute of national importance. The Institute
was also given the status of an autonomous University. From this
modest start in 1950, IIT Kharagpur has been engaged in a steady
process of development with about 18 academic departments, five
centres of excellence. The vast tree-laden campus, spreading over
2100 acres has a self-contained township of over 15,000 inhabitants.
Programs
Postgraduate Diploma in Information Technology (PGDIT)
(PGDIT), was started at its two extension campuses at Kolkata
and Bhubaneswar and also at its main campus in Kharagpur in July,
1999.
Eligibility:
Bachelors degree in any branch of engineering or Masters degree
in Computer Science, Information Technology, Electronics, Physics,
Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Applications (with
Mathematics as a subject at Bachelor's level) with minimum marks
of 60% or equivalent CGPA. Final year students who shall be completing
the above qualifying programmes by July 2005 can also apply. Seats
are reserved for SC/ST and physically challenged (handicapped) candidates
as per Government of India rules.
Application Forms: The Application Form, Admit
Card Format and the Information Brochure are available on the website.
Candidates can purchase the application form from the GATE Office
IIT Kharagpur.
Admission Test: The admission test will be of objective/multiple
choice type to test the skills of the candidates in mathematical
aptitude, analytical reasoning and fundamentals of computer programming.
Counseling: On the basis of performance in the
admission test, the short-listed candidates will be called for counseling
at IIT Kharagpur before final selection is made for admission.
Post Graduate Diploma In Maritime Operation And Management
(PGMOM)
This course is co-coordinated by the Department of Ocean
Engineering and Naval Architecture, IIT Kharagur.
Eligibility for admission:
- The candidate must have a Bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering
or equivalent, which may include electrical, mechanical engineers
and naval architects as per DG Shipping norms.
- The candidate must have successfully completed MEO class-I
competency certificate examination conducted by Government of
India or equivalent.
- All applicants satisfying the above requirements have to be
sponsored by their employers or self-financing.
A written test of two hours duration will be conducted at one of
the three locations as per the candidate's choice among IIT Kharagpur,
Mumbai, Chennai.
The test will be on the basic knowledge in engineering applicable
to marine environment. The final interview for selection will be
conducted at IIT Kharagpur.
