INDIAN INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT, CALCUTTA

The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIMC) was established as the first national institute for Post-Graduate studies and Research in Management by the Government of India in November 1961 in collaboration with Alfred P. Sloan School of Management (MIT), the Government of West Bengal, The Ford Foundation and Indian industry. During its initial years, several prominent faculty formed part of its nucleus, including Paul Samuelson, Jagdish Sheth, J. K. Sengupta, among others.

Courses offered:

Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM)

The course enables a student to face the challenges of modeling unstructured business problems and proposing solutions to such problems. The main thrust of training at the Institute is to imbibe a sense of strategic outlook to management problems in the students.

Post Graduate Computer Aided Management (PGDCM)

This program equips students with tools to solve management problems with a strategic outlook. The integrated nature of this program trains the students to inculcate the abilities of solving complex business problems as well as an e-touch.

Eligibility Criteria for Admission to Post Graduate Programs

Indian Students

1. A Bachelor's degree recognized by the Association of Indian Universities/AICTE as eligible for Postgraduate studies OR an equivalent degree in Agriculture, Arts, Commerce, Engineering and Science.

2. Candidates appearing at the final bachelor's degree or equivalent degree examinations are also eligible to apply provided they complete all their graduating requirements including practical examinations/assignments before June 30 of the proposed year of admission. The admissions will, however, be considered provisional until they produce their marksheet satisfying the eligibility criterion. The time limit for submitting the graduating marksheet is December 31 of the proposed year of admission.

3. Eligibility criterion for PGDCM: No formal specialization in either computers or management would be required for admission to the program. However, knowledge of mathematics at the graduate level would be assumed.

4. Open University graduates must show proof of minimum three years after class twelve and a certificate from the university equivalent to a bachelors degree.

5. Diplomas like Hotel Management, Fashion Technology are not eligible unless equivalent certificates to a three year university degree are provided.

Reservation

There is a 22.5% reservation for SC/ ST students.

Overseas Candidates

Non-Resident Indians and foreign nationals residing outside India for a considerable period of time will be eligible to seek admission to the two year residential Post Graduate Programmes in Management (PGDM and PGDCM) at the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta as “Overseas Candidates”. Overseas candidates seeking admissions to the Post-Graduate Programmes in Management can take GMAT and apply in the prescribed form available in our website. A copy of the GMAT score must accompany the form. The score should not be older than two years as on February 15, 2005 which is the last date for receiving applications. The earliest date of receiving applications is October 15, 2004.

Overseas candidates mean Indians and Foreign Nationals resident outside India. To qualify as an "Overseas candidate",

(a) The candidate must have at least a 3-year bachelor’s degree from a recognized University or Institute in India or abroad, and
(b) The candidate must be living, working or studying outside India at least for the period January 1, 2004 - February 15, 2005.

Candidates in the final year of graduation may also apply provided they complete all their requirements for graduation by June 30, 2005. Candidates must produce evidence of having qualified for "Overseas Candidates" category. Candidates residing in neighboring countries like Nepal from which there are no entry restrictions to India, are not considered as "Overseas candidates".

If required, overseas candidates may be asked to appear for interview in India or outside India based on GMAT score, academic performance, relevant work experience and letters of reference. Necessary travel arrangements for this purpose must be made by the candidate.

Current Government regulations require foreign nationals selected for the Post-Graduate Programmes to get no objection certificate from the Government of India.

Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBM)

The Institute's concern for conducting this Evening Programme in Business Management emerged from the appreciation of a responsibility to offer a quality management education to the young practicing and in-service executives of organizations. Through this programme, IIMC facilitates a process through which the students integrate their real-life work experiences with the conceptual and analytical foundations and developments in management disciplines.

Admission eligibility and procedure

The minimum eligibility criteria for admission to PGDBM are

  • At least a 3-Year Bachelor's degree or equivalent in any discipline recognized by the Association of Indian Universities/AICTE
  • A minimum of 2 Years work experience after graduation at an Executive/Supervisory level, as on May 31 of the year of Admission
  • Must be employed in a full time job at the time of Admission.

All applicants seeking admission to PGDBM must appear for the Common Admission Test (CAT) conducted every year in November for admissions to all IIMs.

Applicants short-listed on the basis of their performance in CAT are called for personal interviews. The final selection for admission is made through a multi criteria assessment procedure based on:

  • Performance in the Common Admission Test (CAT)
  • Relevant academic records
  • Work experience, and
  • Aptitude, ability and interest to pursue management studies as revealed in personal interviews.

Fellow Program

The Institute started the Fellow Programme in 1971. The Fellow Programme of the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta is a full-time doctoral programme in different fields and related disciplines of Management.

Eligibility Criteria

The applicant should hold any one of the following degrees:

  • Post Graduate Degree in Management or equivalent professional qualification.
  • Post Graduate Degree in other discipline
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering / Technology.

Final year students of Bachelor's / Master's degree (such applicants have to complete all requirements of obtaining degree by 30th June of the year of joining). The Master degree holders should acquire at least 55% marks or its equivalent at the Postgraduate level and at least 50% aggregate marks at the Bachelor's degree level.

Applicants holding Bachelor's degree in Engineering / Technology must secure First class / division.

All applicants must ensure that they have obtained minimum of 50% aggregate marks in secondary (Std. X) and higher-secondary (Std. XII) examinations.
