CAT 07 Test Analysis, Cut-offs IIMs- Non IIMs, Key & Explanations
|
| |
|
|
|
| |
This time there was little surprise element in the paper, as the number of questions and time limits remained same. There were 75 questions to be attempted in 2.5 hours. However the level of difficulty varied. Compared to last year, questions in Quant were slightly tougher than last year, while the DI section was more calculation based. There was more variety of questions in the Verbal section and students found it was trickier again this time. Each question had five options. The weightage and marking of the questions, including negative marking, were same as last year.
It is noticed that the CAT paper is becoming more intensive in nature with little ground for pick and choose. Candidates must attempt the maximum number of questions as the time given is 2 minutes per question, on average. This implies that there is enough time to do the questions and candidates must have an intensive knowledge of all areas.

General Analysis of CAT 07
|
| |
The test had three sections, each section having 25 questions with 75 questions in all. Each question carried 4 marks with a negative marking of 1 mark for every wrong answer. The number of answer options per question was five.
The three sections were: |

Section : Problem Solving (QA)
|
| |
The maths section was difficult and it was felt that it required more thought as compared to the maths section last year. Both engineers and non-engineers would have found the section quite difficult this time. There were some direct questions. Out of 25 questions, about 8 sitters and another 8 were medium difficulty level. 9 questions were on the difficult side. There was a mix of questions from Numbers, algebra, functions, inequalities and arithmetic. The cut off in the Quant section is expected to be 24-28.

Section : Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VA & RC) |
| |
|
| |
The verbal section was of a higher difficulty level than in the earlier years. The number of questions remained the same, but there was a larger variety. This was achieved by putting fewer questions for every type. For instance, the number of passages in Reading Comprehension was increased to 4, but they had only three questions per passage, fewer than last time. Thus there were 12 questions of Reading Comprehension in the paper, out of a total of 25 questions, which constituted 50% of the verbal section. This was slightly less that the 60% Comprehension questions that had been included last year. The importance of Reading Comprehension thus remains in the CAT and experts’ advice of doing extra reading was proved right again this year. The level of difficulty was also high as the choices were very close and many students were at a loss as to which choice to mark. One of the passages was sourced by Bulls Eye to the book “Reflexivity and the crisis of Western Reason: Logological Investigations” by Barry Sandywell. Other passages consisted of Human Biology, Art, Paradigms of a Mature Scientific Community, History and Science.
The balance 13 questions consisted of paragraph completion, Grammar and Critical Reasoning. There were 3 questions on Grammar, in which one had to identify the incorrect parts of sentences. This was purely grammar based. Three questions were on Critical Reasoning, in which the students had to complete a paragraph given. Perhaps the surprise of the year was the inclusion of three questions which tested basic English: the difference between further and farther, for instance, or the difference between censored and censured. These questions on English Usage tested how much candidates actually knew about using common, everyday English. There were also four questions on parajumbles or order arrangement, in which candidates had to make an order out of a jumbled paragraph. We expect the cut off in this section to be 26 to 30. |

Section : Data Interpretation / Logical Reasoning (DI/LR) |
| |
|
| |
This section had 25 questions mainly from Pure DI (Calculation Based), Reasoning & Data Sufficeincy. There were 3 pure DI bocks. Overall two blocks were very easy in DI Section. DS questions were also doable. Though on the face DI section looked simple but lots of questions involved critical reading & tricky calculations. We expect the cut off in this section to be 32 to 36. |
