Statement Of Purpose

I always desired a career that requires innovative ideas, educated risks and technical excellence. A master degree from SDSU will prove central to my success, as it would impart the skill set and technical knowledge necessary to get into intricacies of the research, my long-term goal. Further, it would provide me with an opportunity to interact with some of the finest brains and thus enable me to develop behavioral, interpersonal and technical skills.

On completion of my Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) in Computer Science from Marathwada Institute of Technology (MIT), Aurangabad, India, in June’2000 I joined Tata Infotech Limited (TIL), Noida, India as an Associate Systems Engineer. I joined TIL to acquire knowledge about the practical implementations of the concepts taught at college. After being in TIL for 4 months I was put on deputation in Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). TCS is Asia’s largest software Consultancy and development organization. It offers a dynamic blend of strategy consulting and system integration services to help organizations architect and build their businesses in the eEconomy. After two years of highly stimulating experience I feel there is immense scope for me to learn and this is precisely what has prompted me to pursue a master's degree.

At TCS, I was involved in the design and development of Network Custody and Clearing (NCS) system for Bank of New York. I was part of the team working in design and development of Communication Interfaces for various modules of the project. Though my major work as a team member was to code in C/C++ for various interfaces in the project. I was coding applications which used DB2 as a database and IBM-CICS/MQ as the middleware on UNIX as well as OS390 Operating systems. The eagerness to know more about how things actually work on CICS/MQ motivated me to gain good knowledge of system level programming through my seniors and available resources.

I was very much interested in system level programming and communications from the very beginning of my career but due to lack of resources could not carry it further. It has become increasingly clear to me that my personal goals, as well as my skills and interests will be better served by the acquisition of a master's degree with a specialization in this area. Further, I feel it is an area where I can realize fuller exploitation of my strengths. With time I also developed interest in wireless communication protocols for the hand held devices. In the coming years we are going to see more and more intelligent handheld wireless devices with new and fancier applications. We need new protocols to support vast functionality. I would like to work in these emerging technologies and protocols.

Being a student of a professional course in one of the premier educational institutions of the country, I had many opportunities review and select the technical papers for presentations during Literati. The faculty of MIT has been encouraging in making me think independently.  I presented papers on “BlueTooth” and “802.11b” when they were in their fancy.

I have a diverse interest in extra-curricular activities. Ever since my school days, I have taken part in debates and elocution. This has developed in me a sense of Self-confidence, an ability to analyze issues and see both sides of the issue. This has helped me in developing into an effective communicator and at the same time has made me an effective listener. I was an executive member of the music and dramatics club of the college that was involved in organizing various competitions like dance, music, plays etc. Thus today as I am ready for graduate studies, I have not only secured a firm base for an exciting future in research but have also developed a sound personality which I hope will help me attain success in my career.

I feel for the first time, definitive about the culmination of my career goals. I envision a career in computer science and I can confidently assert that I have all the prerequisite skills to make an impact in the field. I realize that achievement of these goals require tremendous effort, discipline and perseverance. I confidently feel that I possess the basic knowledge, the capacity to work hard and the depth of interest necessary to sustain the motivation and the drive for a research career.

On going through the brochure and web site of your university, I have come to the conclusion that your university is well suited to enhance my skills. I view it as an experience that will give me a defined perspective and would stand in good stead in realizing my goal of a research-oriented career.

Lastly, I assure you that with my academic and work experiences I would be a worthy contributor to my MS class.

Statement Of Purpose

Working in an ever-changing and challenging environment that has enough room for exploring new ideas has always been my dream of a perfect career. I am applying for Master of Applied Science program in Electronics due to my inspiration from the Digital Electronics and an unwavering belief in the importance of digital signal processing. VLSI technology not only embraces the dynamics of the IC design but also its interference with the schematic and VHDL approaches.

My undergraduate courses in Electronics and Communication Engineering, with the highly diverse nature of assignments helped me in understanding various theoretical and practical aspects. During the 6 months industrial training at Semiconductor Complex Limited (a Govt. of India undertaking), I studied AVR microcontrollers, VERILOG hardware description language and VHDL. Developing and executing projects under time constraints at Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) inculcated in me with the importance of group work. These experiences gave me not only maturity and ability to take responsibility but also flexibility to approach the rapidly changing environment with an open frame of mind. I learnt that expertise is always in terms of value added under varying and unfavorable conditions. It is with the help of these learnings, I have constantly maintained myself in the top 5 students in my department.

It is in these years that I started getting the idea of the problems faced by the industry and the possible areas of research and had informal discussions with experts in the Electronics Industry. I also regularly assisted my faculty members and have been undertaking assignments on Digital Circuit Design and their applications. I had designed low noise oscillators, phase lock loops and data recovery circuits in bipolar and CMOS technologies. Last year, I designed a DSP based Digital motor controller using TMS 320 P15. It controlled the speed and rotations of a Digital motor widely used in floppy drive control applications and automation and also a Multi Appliance Controller using PC, which controlled operation of around 255 devices simultaneously using PC’s Line Printer Terminal LPT1 .The program to control the appliances is written in C compiled using turbo C compiler .It controls the relays through the interface circuit which switch the appliances ‘ON’ or ‘OFF’.

During the undergraduate studies, I always welcomed challenges in the form of potential opportunities and took each opportunity with all my zeal and enthusiasm to explore new vistas of learning. With effective time management skills coupled with the ability to take initiatives, I made the best use of my synergies in both academics and co-curricular activities. Capitalizing upon my earlier laurels in paper presentations and organization skills, I successfully organized seminars, exhibitions of technological products; quiz contests etc as Public Relation Officer under the aegis of Indian Society of Technical Education (ISTE) since last three years.

I also co-founded e-child with my seniors to provide FREE computer education to needy students. More than 500 students have benefited till date. In the absence of my personal services, I plan to contribute by sending regular donations to e-child. These experiences taught me that a career is built not by merely acquiring education or by working in an occupation. It is built when one adds value through ones work to a target group.

My strong academic background coupled with continuous quest for learning has given me a perfect base and motivation to have further inputs so as to attain an expertise in Microelectronics by pursuing graduate studies. I realize that I need a better understanding of the various facets of latest design technologies, product research & development and the inter-linkages between Hardware and Software Entities. I would continue my quest for further learning by specializing in the VLSI design and testing involving the design, development and evaluation of digital circuits with an emphasis on its practical applications in the Satellite & Telecommunications.

I would like to join ******** university for several reasons. The focused structure of the course will help me concentrate and work towards the attainment of my career goals. The course work would help me gain exposure, insight, knowledge and hands-on experience in a real time work environment. I am impressed with the quality of education provided by the university in terms of the well-structured curriculum and the widely recognized faculty. With my dedication, perseverance, commitment and hard work, I am confident to prove myself as an asset.
